Problems turning on wireless card

I just downloaded ubuntu on HP zv5255us and am trying to figure it out.  I can't log on to any wireless networks because the card won't turn on.  It seems like it turns on as window is loading and turns off when I shut down.  Any Ideas or comments would be very appreciated.  I will post the specs later

I am using 8.10
the modem is a broadcom bcm4306
From the System menu, go to Administration: Hardware drivers.
Activate the wireless drivers from there and follow the prompts.
I have the same machine.

... no muss no fuss!! :-)

You don't even need the drivers.

If you can connect directly to the internet, type in "sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter" in a terminal window.

I had the same issue with my BCM4311.

When it runs it'll ask if you want it to "Fetch and install firmware?" Hit "Yes"

Reboot, and you'll be good to go.

Edit second: Ah, I guess b43-fwcutter is the driver, but still. It's a one step process, lol.
