USB devices as root?

I'm having problems with the latest release of Ubuntu and USB memory devices.  Ubuntu is interpreting every single USB memory device, from a memory stick to my iPod to my external hard drive, as root-only for everything, including saving to, altering on, and unmounting the things.  I thought I had a work-around for the iPod, but not so much.  This is extremely frustrating, as I am proficient enough with a terminal to get myself into trouble but not out of it without help!  As far as I know, I did nothing to the system to make this happen; it's been like this for at least this latest release, possibly the one before.

Any takers?
TIA
