upgrading firefox

I am trying to update my version of Firefox to 9.0 from 8.0.1.  The tool that pops up in Firefox at first never actually connects, so I have to do it manually.  Trouble is, I am running 8 but also have the Ubuntu release for Ubuntu 10.04 (I think it's Firefox 3.5 or something) that I do not use.  What I need to know is: when I download Firefox 9.0, where should I download it and how do I make sure that it replaces the current version?  I've downloaded it, and unpacked the archive in the .mozilla directory in my Home directory, but a restart of the system still has 8.0.1 running.  Any ideas?
